CLASP coordinates the Clean Lighting Coalition, a global campaign to accelerate the transition to energy-efficient, mercury-free LEDs. On 21 March, 137 countries representing more than 6 billion people will meet at the Minamata Convention on Mercury COP4 to vote on a proposal to phase out fluorescent lighting, which contains mercury. Read more about how we support this global movement.

The Clean Lighting Coalition and Climate Action Network are spearheading a letter to the Heads of Delegation to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, urging them to end exemptions for toxic lighting at COP4. Join the movement and sign the letter.

In anticipation of COP4, the Clean Lighting Coalition launched #EndToxicLighting, a digital campaign to amplify the need for an accelerated global transition to LED lighting.  From March 2 to 25, #EndToxicLighting will feature a vast array of resources and events, including reports, regionally focused evidence documents, and press from the Clean Lighting Coalition and partners. Learn how to get involved.

New data gathered in over 25 countries prove that a transition to all LED lighting is feasible, cost-effective and safer. We respond to issues raised by the Global Lighting Association to demonstrate that it is time to Make Mercury History in the lighting sector. Read our response.

A report from the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, the American Council for Energy Efficiency Economy and CLiC provides new evidence that the US is ready to phase-out fluorescents. An accelerated clean lighting transition would prevent the sale of 16,000 pounds of mercury and avoid 200 Mt of carbon through 2050. Read the report.

The European Commission will phase-out general purpose fluorescent lighting across Europe in 2023, under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

As the EU and trade partners phase-out fluorescents due to inefficiency and toxicity, a new study from CLASP shows that remaining fluorescent lamp manufacturing in Europe will lose 80% of their exports by 2023. The EU has an economic opportunity to preserve jobs and lighting exports by transitioning domestic fluorescent manufacturing facilities to LED. Read the study.

CLASP recently updated Mepsy and included a scenario demonstrating how countries will benefit if the world phases out fluorescents by 2025. The African Lighting Amendment scenario is modeled after the proposed amendment by the Africa region. Governments and people can use the tool to calculate the cost and energy savings of a fluorescent free lighting market. Calculate your country savings.
